Selective rack is the configuration which places all loads on an aisle. This configuration provides efficient use of space with immediate access to every pallet stored. The rack consists of horizontal load supporting members beams and vertical members frames which suspend these beam members off the floor. The beams are connected to the frames using welded lock plates allowing for a connection of inherent rigidity. The basic building block of any pallet rack system is called a Bay.

Dimensionally a Bay of rack is defined as the available width between too vertical supporting members frames as viewed from an aisle. This available width is often referred to as the Clear entry in the industry. Most selective rack systems have bays that are two pallet widths wide. This rack design is ideal if a product needs separating for individual and immediate picking. Loads do not need to be stackable and may be of varying heights and widths. In instances here the load depth is variable it may be necessary to install load supports called pallet support bars.
